Link, a boy living with his uncle, is troubled on a stormy night while in his bed; he hears the telepathic cries of the princess of the kingdom, Zelda. She is trapped in a cell and requires an immediate rescue. Waking, Link sees his uncle (who is a soldier for Hyrule) leaving the house, and he tells Link to stay put. After he departs, Link takes a lantern and leaves despite his uncle's instructions.
After sneaking into a hidden passage in the palace garden, he finds his uncle, mortally injured. His uncle gives Link his sword and shield before passing away. Knowing he must press on, Link enters the castle and manages to find Princess Zelda within, and he frees her and rescorts her to a secret passage leading to a sanctuary.
Link learns that the wizard Agahnim had captured six Maidens descended from ancient Sages, and that to defeat him he must gain the Master Sword. He travels Hyrule to find three sacred Pendants of Power, Wisdom, and Courage, then takes the sword from the Lost Woods. While searching for the last Pendant, Link acquies two treasures known as the Moon Pearl and the Magic Mirror; using these, he can enter the mirroring Dark World.
But the Sanctuary is attacked, and Princess Zelda is gone. Link goes to Hyrule Castle to challenge Agahnim himself, only to arrive too late. Agahnim had sent all of the Maidens and Princess Zelda to the Dark World, and now Link must rescue them. [incomplete, I have not finished this game yet]

In a sacred wood, the children of the forest live under the protection of the Great Deku Tree, who assigns them each a fairy partner to guide them. All save one, the lone little boy without a fairy, Link. It escapes the understanding of all the Kokiri why the Great Deku Tree did not give him one. But while the others are friendly to him, they somewhat shun and see themselves above him, especially the local bully, Mido. They feel he is different from them somehow. His only true friend is Saria, a cheerful girl that is popular and well liked among the others.
Link has found lately he is troubled by an inexplicable recurring nightmare; he stands outside a gate, and a girl and a woman riding on a horse, and an evil-looking man chasing after them, only to stop and look at him.
It is during this nightmare that he is awakened by none other than Navi, a fairy that the Great Deku Tree has finally sent to him. Navi had been told the fate of the world rested in the hands of this boy, but seeing him she can hardly believe it. She tells him that he must go see the Deku Tree.
Ecstatic, Link goes about the village, showing his new fairy to all his friends. They all are happy for him, especially Saria. But when he goes to see the Deku Tree, he is stopped by Mido, who states that he still refuses to accept him, even with a fairy and demands that he have a sword and shield before he lets him pass. Link locates both and Mido is forced to let him go see the Tree. [incomplete, to be completed another time]
